With winter just around the corner, now is the time to secure your firewood delivery to your New River Valley, VA, home. While vital to homes with woodstoves, firewood is a good idea to have a stockpile of even if your home has central heating. With heavy snow and ice storms knocking out power year after year, the ability to warm up around a fire is critical.
Heating Up
Traditional woodstoves are an excellent source of heat that do not rely on the power grid. Many homes have wood as a backup heat option in the New River Valley because waiting on the power company to fix service is not an option when it is below freezing. Firewood delivery to the New River Valley, VA is therefore an essential service. Picking up your own wood requires a truck and is often inaccessible to older folks.
How Much Wood Should You Order?
Firewood is traditionally sold in cords. A cord of firewood is 4’x4’x8’ or 128 cubic feet. To estimate how many cords you will need to have delivered, you will need your home’s square footage, the length of time in months that you expect to need heat, and an estimate of your insulation quality. This helpful firewood calculator does all the hard math for you; input your numbers and watch it work! If you are only using firewood for outdoor fires a few times a week, then a single cord of wood will be plenty to last you through the cool seasons.

Firepits and Outdoor Cooking
Fall is a perfect time for cooking outdoors. The weather is chilly, the sun sets earlier, and food just tastes better over an open flame. There are many delicious campfire recipes to try out, but a simple hot dog on a skewer is a good backup for folks just looking to enjoy something simple. Always make sure to follow burn bans and outdoor fire safety rules when enjoying your campfire. Keep leaves and debris clear in at least a 3-foot diameter around your fire. Never leave a flame unattended.
How Should You Store Wood Properly?
Store your wood at least 10 feet from your home to lower termite and stinkbug risks. Keep your wood off the ground; either a rack or a shed will work for this. Keep your wood covered with a tarp or a roof; wet wood is difficult to burn and rots easily.
